'Help for the animals' is all Spotsy woman wants for 100th birthday

Bonnie Clark, an animal lover from Spotsylvania County, is turning 100 years old next week. This senior citizen has owned dozens of pets throughout her life and proudly declares that "The animals need our help". In celebration of her birthday, Bonnie's goal is to raise $5,000 for Fredericksburg Regional SPCA: getting as many of these animals as possible into loving homes.

Giovanni documentary wins at Sundance

"Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project" won a grand jury prize at the 2023 Sundance festival. The documentary follows a recently retired professor and internationally acclaimed poet from Virginia Tech, spanning Giovanni's 79 years of accomplishments. Some of these include winning the Rosa Parks Woman of Courage Award, writing three New York bestsellers, and getting a bat species named after her.

Thousands take icy plunge into Atlantic Ocean for annual fundraising event in Virginia Beach

Over 2,000 Virginia Beach residents came together on Feb. 4 for the 25th annual polar plunge. This icy dip raised $1.55 million for Special Olympics Virginia; enough to train more than 18,000 athletes. Swimmers braved an average temperature of 30 degrees, claiming that their discomfort was worth the good ultimately done for others.
